The building was built in 1875 as the Union Indian Agency for the Five Civilized Tribes. The Government agent and his family lived upstairs and the offices were downstairs. There were other buildings, a barn, separate kitchen and I believe another living quarters. We have photos on display of the building showing the changes over the years. It was used for many things after the Agency moved into town. One of those was the Creek Freedmen Orphanage/School that you mentioned. I did not know the name of it either until today during my research. Apparently it was started by a Baptist Ministry and the Creek Nation together. I have now seen it written as Evangel School and Evangel Mission. I am thrilled to see these letters that you have. I will make sure that this name is added to our archival information so that people will know. I hope, after some further research that we can also have some sort of marker or plaque made as well. I would like to talk with you some more about these letters if possible. I see this was posted quite a while ago and don't know if you are still able to see comments. If so, here is my contact info:

MaryBeth Timothy
5CTM Exhibit Coordinator
1101 Honor Heights Dr.
Muskogee, OK 74401
918-683-1701
5civilizedtribes@sbcglobal.net
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13157406386516404090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1692036423578234815.post-30719512777197109982011-07-03T16:52:26.046-07:002011-07-03T16:52:26.046-07:00It was originally used as the Creek Agency. The abandoned cemetery at the bottom of the hill is known as Old Agency Cemetery, as well.

So glad you enjoyed the post and thanks for your remarks.Angela Y.
